Color me dumbfounded. I lowered my spare tire today, just for ****s and grins. What did I find? The side walls were trashed from the tire riding against the underside of the truck. There were DEEP grooves all around the top side of the tire, obviously from the tire "mount". I was shocked. The only thing I can figure is that it must be the original spare tire (truck is a '97) and the previous owner must have NEVER lowered it.
I should have thought to lower the tire before I bought the truck last October. I guess it's not that big of deal, I can pick up a spare tire from the junk yard for next to nothing. I'm just suprised to find such an obvious saftey issue in the design of the tire "mount". Glad I checked it before I needed it!
Every one ive seen has done that. Some of that will come out after its been driven a while. I put a plywood spacer on each side between the frame and tire. It seemed to help on the new spare.
Well Thanks! I am indeed currently serving on an Aegis platform, the mighty cruiser USS Hue City (CG-66). I assume your in the Navy or former Navy? Not too many people know what Aegis is! Thanks again!
