Lots of times they use a different brand/model of tire for the spare compared to the regular tires. They use the cheapest thing they can use for a spare, often not a full-depth tread tire and often not an all-season tire, even if its a 'full size' spare.
Another possibility is that the truck came with Continentials and the purchaser would only buy it if it had Goodyears on it. The swap was made but did not include changing the spare.
Yep lots of things can cause it. They will go as cheap as possible on the spare since it's only designed to go a hundred miles or so anyways, no reason for them to pay for a full-blown nice tire.
That's why when buying new vehicles, an upgraded spare tire costs more.
It's really an old trick. Dealer or mechanic at dealer gets a bunch of newish but bad tires with bad belt or some sort of flaw for little or nothing from his buddy at a tire shop. As the new vehicles with full size spares come in, he simply swaps the spare with one of the others. Pretty soon he's got a set of brand new tires for himself.
When I got new tires last summer I had the best one of the old ones put on the spare rim, the tire that came off was full-size, but it was the original from '94 and definetly needed replacement.
my tires are 235/75-15's but the spare is a 225/70-15. it looks like a regular tire but has been hot-stamped with "limited use only" on the sidewall. you would think a 4x4 would have the same size spare as the rest of the tires. i know the 235 was the factory size due to the door sticker. i have aluminum wheels and a steel spare. (though ive never seen a factory spare on a alumminum rim) mine had been under the truck for 10 years and never been out. broke the hold-down bolt getting it out. have it mounted in the bed now.
It's also possible the original owner didn't want the donut... and rather than fork out the $110 for a full size... just got one a junkyard or something... <shrug>
