Well, the question was will it start and run
And yes, you can pull the cluster out and drive the truck
Out of the shop then back in when the fixed cluster returns for instance
We used to send those out constantly for warranty repair

Ok, it starts and idles fine, even revs smoothly. As soon as I put it in gear, speedometer bounces, starts to cough and tries to stall and runs like crap. I have a different speedometer I want to install. I hope that will cure my issues.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

What happens if you unplug the TRS or MLP and then put it in gear?
The new cluster might help
I am a big find the code and diagnosis man
Not much for part replacement until a few hoops have been jumped through
I do throw parts at them like everybody else when stumped (rather amusing chasing your tail sometimes)

I have no idea how to pull codes or what TRS or a MLP is. I am going to put my new (to me) speedometer in today.

Difficult to pull codes on the older pre OBD2 cars and trucks (your 1993)
You will need an Innova scan tool or another tester or you can use a paperclip (with some knowledge and gumption)
TRS (Transmission Range Sensor) is the new term for neutral safety switch as is the MLP Manual Lever Position sensor
Both bolt to the transmission where the shift lever goes, tells the processor which gear you have selected
Sounds like a nice truck
So, unplug the trans connector on the drivers side and see if it still runs or if it shifts okay
I am not certain or sure the cluster controls the field on your alternator
Maybe check it with a DVOM and see what the voltage is at the battery with the engine running and the cluster disconnected

Replaced the speedometer and it fixed ALL my issues. Runs great, shifts great, and idles great. Who would have thought the speedo controls so much.
