More power
Gotta be honest with ya, lt_bigdaddy, you're the first guy I ever heard of here with the 5.4L. As far as mods, you might want to go check out the Expedition forum to see what they are doin' or the Super Duty forum. The 5.4L is a popular engine with both those platforms.
There is room for 285's assuming that you got a 4x4, which would puzzle me even more as to why you have the 5.4L...
The favorite shocks for these seem to be the RS9000 Ranchos and the Edlebrock Performer IAS. I am straying from the pack and considering the Doetsch Tech 3000's that I will install this spring. I'm still doin' some research though...
What gearing is the rear end of your truck? If you got 3.73's and put on bigger tires I'd recommend that you up (actually lower) the gearing to 4.10. But that's just my $.02.
Make sure you set up your gallery, we all like to see each other's trucks! Stock or not!
Thanks for the input. I know that almost everyone with an X has the V10 or the PowerStroke, but I bought the truck for less than half the original sticker, and it only had 19000 miles on it....I just couldn't resist, besides, I don't pull anything but a Bass boat and it won't tax the truck at all...it is a 4x2 by the way but it still looks like you could put 285's on it, I ordered some shocks from procomp for my jeep the other day, they seem to be well made so I think I will order those for my X.

NO OFFENSE to lt_bigdaddy!! But a 255hp ('02 Excursion specs) engine moving 3+ tons of truck ain't gonna do much. The 5.4L is just adequate in the F150's & F250's. Good news though, the 5.4L has more bolt on mods available in the aftermarket than the V10. I imagine that if the truck had the 4.10's, acceleration wouldn't be that bad.
IMHO, it shouldn't even be an option. It's not enough engine for the mass of truck that it pulls around. In fact, there are times when I think 310hp isn't enough. 360hp/475lb.ft. would be a good start.
Sorry, lt_bigdaddy, I'm not trying to offend you or put down your ride.
Not to worry about offending me brother....I deal with the scum of the earth everyday at work so dissing my truck isn't going to get me...Ok, so I have an engine that is too small for my truck, what to do? I have done two things so far and it has made the truck sound better and pull harder...I bought a K&N filter charger filter and modified the air box as I was advised to do on the super duty page. Next I had a friend that owns a fabrication and exhaust shop fix the exhaust...he installed a Y behind the Cat. and installed 4" diameter stainless steel glass packs that have a 3" inlet and outlet along with new 3" dual tail pipes and 4"x12" polished, stainless steel, slash cut tips....it looks great and sounds even better, loud enough to hear over the cool new induction sound under the hood...it defenately pulls harder....about the other question someone posted in regards to 0-60 times, Why are you in a race to 60? I want it to pull hard but I don't go around trying to stop light race in a 7000 pound truck either...oh well, to each his own...

Are you a prison guard?
Ok, so I have an engine that is too small for my truck, what to do?
Paxton superchargers are "on sale" here at FTE!
Looks like your headin' in the right direction. You didn't say, butdo you have 4.10's in the rear? If not, I'd do that!!I have a 2000 X with a 5.4. I put 285/75 16s on it, superchip, K&N filter kit. No other mods were done and I beat my friend with a V10 X, stock from a 20 mile roll. The 5.4 really dips up to 3/4 throttle. After that you can't seem to feel any difference.
I came from a Mark VIII so i would know a dog when i feel one. I was actually impressed and the mileage savings is good compared to the V10.
1 week ago I had the chance to go to one of those Ford No Boundries test drive events. I drove a 4x2 X with the 5.4 , in addition to 4x2 V10 X, 4x4 PSD X & 4x4 V10 X. We got to drive a road test, then an off-road test.
I gotta tell you, I did not notice much difference between the 4x2 5.4 X & the 4x2 V10 X! I was totally shocked :-staun by the amount of power I felt driving the 5.4.
However, I couldn't say how the 5.4 would do climbing mountain passes with a 9,000 lbs trailer.... Probably OK for lighter towing only!
