Wow didnt expect to find a forum like this on ford trucks
I bought a 95 Ford F150 Inline 6 4.9 2 weel drive 5 speed manual tranny I got it 11 months ago and has ran great but about a month ago sometimes while driving the motor would cut out but never die.
Now some times it wont start (no spark) then 10 min later everything is fine will start ans no problems for a week then start back again.
Today I went to my parents house and when i went to leave would not start(no spark) then after an hour it started but died again....so i got a ride home then a few hours later i got picked up by my brother to go back to the truck I was going to take the ignition module off and go get it tested......but decided to see if it would start and it did didnt die again and drove home no problem....
Does anybody have any idea what it may be thats causing this.
Sounds like the TFI module going bad. Or a bad coil. Its a common problem with our trucks. Sorry I don't have more info, never had an ignition problem before.
usually modules work or fail totally, I would check the coil, more than likely it's faulty or it maybe as simple as a bad ignition switch or steering column that is loose internally and allowing the switch to be disconnected when you apply just the right pressure on the wheel or shift linkage, trust me this can happen.
Thanks for your replys,Went to the store today to pick up a gift for my neice's Birthday after running around all day with out any problems come out and would not start after 5 min it started went to the birthday party and then when i went to leave would not start.....went and replaced the coil and the ignition Module....Still no spark....so i guess the next thing is to change is the pick up module inside of the distributor.....im going to have to take that gear off at the end....is there a special tool to knock out that small pin or just a small punch and hammer ? worried i may bend the shaft...with the problems i have described does it sound that it may be the pick up module?
I have never had or heard of the reluctor or pickup magnet failing I'd look elsewhere first see where the spark/current is and then where you lose it , could be a neutral safety switch etc.
that happened to us on a 95 work van. it would die on the way to jobs and 10 min. later it would crank back up. it was the stator inside of the distributor.
Check for corrosion at the two leads that go into the coil, my dad's 92 F150 had this prob, it would run fine and just die, and run fine again. Make sure ur getting 12 volts there at the coil input.
