My 1996 f150 with the straight 6 has AC that is not blowing cold. I wanted to replace the accumulator and those orifice filters. But I can't get the metal hose connections loose. It feels like i'm going to tear the whole AC box off the firewall. Anybody else seen this and found a way to get past it? i've been soaking the connections in PB Blaster. Truck is a low mileage oil field truck. Not much rust but red dirt everywhere.
Yes, just some good penetrant like Rostoff and wiggle the connection back and forth to loosen it up some before installing the special tool
I hit them with a good shot of Brakleen followed by blowing out any remaining dirt with shop air
Then I hit them with the penetrant to lube up the connection and o ring
Then remove it with the tool (push in first, then the tool, then pull apart)
Good luck

tool? I might be missing something here. I'm struggling with the big nut type connectors on the cooling lines coming out of the accumulator. I thought they were just a typical threaded twist off. I'm talking about the connections highlighted in this picture:
The pic is where the orifice tube is easily located. To remove the connection you need these available cheap at any auto parts store. Hope this is what you are talking about. Click the Amazon link for tool info
A new evap is about $50. Save the hassle and scrap the old dryer and evap.
He can't get it off. Thread explains his problems I sent a video but maybe you can help HIT MAN look at his pics on where he is having trouble. Hope things are going well for you bud.
I mean just saw pipe from dryer into evap in half. Same with liquid line into it. Replace that stuff. One could spend hours trying to retain stuff that is dirty anyway.
That orifice tube is what told me I had the black death, IT WAS NASTY as was everything else. Maybe if he pulls it and sees anything like that the hacksaw will come out.
Great,
Yours is old school for the accumulator fittings
Use some heat on those big accumulator nuts
That is not a 1996 factory accumulator, If that is on yours, it must be ARA air or a kit?
Either way, use some heat, throw the accumulator away, replace the o rings, the lines should be okay
Use the special tools on the rest of the system where the spring lock couplers are
I used some cargo cinch straps and held the accumulator in place and finally broke loose those hose fittings. Then I got the special tool to removed the hose clamp at the orifice filter and got it replaced. now, I think i'll try to do AC system flush and see what happens after that.
