ac not blowing cold enough

I have a 92 explorer the ac was retrofitted in 01 with r134a as well as a new compressor my question is, is that the past few days it has been in the 90s the ac does not seem to be blowing cold enough it seems i have to leave it on high all the time and even with that it is never cool it does not seem its blowing very cold how can i get my ac colder? I hooked a gauge up and it is right in the normal area with the ac on.

I could be wrong but i've heard the older stuff blew colder than the newer freon. But it was more toxic so they went with the newer stuff. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

That is absolutly true. The old R12 was definatly better.... my 92 used to blow at 48 degrees... really nice... and my 99 does not even compare.

Here's what you can do to test the temp that is coming out the vents.... get a meat thermometer and stick it into the vent with the AC on max. It should be down into the 50's at best. If not, I would have the system checked out.

thanks 99xplr, i tested the vent temp and they are blowing at around 60-63, i hooked my pressure gauge back up to the low side with the ac on high the pressure was at 30-35psi and was steady, i checked another one of my vehicals and it was at 25 psi and the ac was blowing out at about 48 degrees, let some of the r134a out and now im reading at about 25-27 psi with the ac on high and max and its blowing between 50-55 degrees now that was at about 8pm and the temp was about 77 outside, its suppose to be in the 90's tommarow so i will keep the temp in the vent and see how cold it blows, with similer ac systems i dont see why my ac cant blow in the high 40s like my other vehical does or even in low 50's.

I sounds like something might be clogged up and not allowing the refridgerent to circulate correctly. At this point we are at the end of my knowledge of AC systems, so hopefully someone will step up and give you a hand.

I'm having the same problem with my '95. It came with r134a so there hasn't been any conversion. Last summer I had it recharged and it was great. This summer it is only blowing cool air, not the cold air that it has in the past. I checked the pressure and it is in the 40psi range. The compressor seems to be running all the time, not cycling like last year when it was low. What gives?

40psi is a little high if the compressor is on and the fan is set on high and max, mine was around the same and after checking the psi on another car i saw it was lower and let some out of mine, now its at about 25-30 psi, and blowing colder i would like it to be colder but we will see if anyone else has anything to say

My 03 does the same thing, but remember: it is in the 90's, and the thing is working very hard. Get it checked; you might need a recharge, but if it gets better when it cools down, don't worry too much.

It's been cooler here the last too days but it has made no difference in my AC. I let some pressure out, down to the 30psi range. Since it isn't/wasn't low and the outside temp is reasonable, what should I (we) be looking at?

Is it possible that the accumulator is broken/leaking? Would this cause the problem that we are seeing? Am I wrong in thinking that the accumulator holds cold air, so if that were leaking warm air could mix in? My engine compartment drips condensed water as if the A/C is working fine.

It appears I was incorrect about the function of the accumulator.

artic freeze

I had the same problem. The system should run in the 25lb range. If the compressor is cycling on and off that is a sure sign of low frigerant. I bought a 19oz can of ARTIC FREEZE from my local Pep Boys. I think Walmart sells it to. Manufactored by "Interdynamics". Its a blue can with a build in gauge(gauge and trigger assembly can be reused with any product with same thread head on it, if you have gauges you don't need can with it, buy the one with out cheaper.). Any how my system was running in the 60 degree range. Add this Arctic freeze in, kept adding while watching the gauge which stayed in the 25lb "green" range on the gauge. System took the whole can. Checked my temp and now have 48 degrees blowing out. Refrigerant should not leak out of system so I suppose there was a leak some where maybe a dry o-ring from the winter months or just simply need a recharge, its a 98 explorer. Product has 3oz of sealer in it. So I am hoping it sealed the problem. Been running in the 90's around here past two weeks and still blowing cold. Good luck !!! and I am sure I don't need to tell you to run the system while you are adding refrigerant. Also running a water hose on condensor while filling helps if you are doing it on a HOT day. STAY COOL

I think I have a vacuum problem. There is not enough vacuum (4 psi) to close the heater control valve (looks like 6 psi). From what I could tell that is only closed with Max A/C. That same vacuum line opens the re-circulate air damper. The black vacuum line (in the dash from the reserve tank?) shows about 17 psi but the white line only shows 4 psi. What could be causing this? Leak, bad selector, something else? If anyone has solved a similar vacuum A/C problem can you tell me where to start?

Arctic Freeze has 1/4 oz. of sealer per can (just got an email from the company on that). The 2 oz. number is the amount of lubricating oil per can.
