This deceptively stupid simple project just keeps running in to snags. I was hoping to get my door access panels back on this weekend. The Oval Head Slotted Stainless Steel 10-24 screws were painted without issue. I had never used my AKKTOL BT-607 riv-nut tool. I figured that I should do a test riv-nut first. Apparently, I have the depth/stroke of the tool set too long, as I easily snapped the mandrel off on the first attempt on a test piece. I possess no super human strength. I hate tools that break so easily. A new 10-24 mandrel has been ordered. We'll try this again with a shorter depth/stroke after the new mandrel arrives. Stainless steel oval head slotted 10-24 screws ready to paint. Screws primed and painted with custom mixed paint. AKKTOL BT-607 Riv-Nut Tool Snapped mandrel on first use. Yahoo.
New 10-24 riv-nut mandrel arrived today. It is an Astro Tool brand ordered from Amazon that fits and functions fine for my AKKTOL BT-607 riv-nut tool. I had to drill the factory screw hole size in the door out to fit the 10-24 riv-nut.. The first 10-24 size riv-nut fits good and solid, and it looks like the door access panel will fit on top of the riv-nut with no noticeable difference. I am going to proceed with the rest. First riv-nut install in door for door access panel.
I finally got this finished up. The rivnuts must be installed pretty much dead perfect for where they need to be to line up with the holes on the door panel. I wound up grinding out 3 of the previously installed rivnuts and elongating the hole in the direction the hole needed to be in order to get all of the holes correctly lined up with the door panel holes. You pretty much have to install the rivnuts one at a time, checking the hole alignment and screw fit of the panel before installing the next rivnut. If the rivnuts are not pretty much dead perfectly lined up with the holes in the door panel, the head of the screw will not seat squarely in the presunk divet in the door panel hole, scrape the paint off, and basically look like hell. I used stainless steel rivnuts and 10/24 size stainless steel slotted oval head screws. The 10/24 slotted oval head screw style and size look factory correct for a Mercury from what I have seen. I purchased the screws from McMaster-Carr online. I like how solid the rivnuts hold the panel on without fear of ever stripping out, unlike the factory sheet metal screws which were falling out of the door panel and on to the running boards. @abe Yes, Screw heads were first primed with a metal etch primer, and then painted with a custom mixed can of spray paint that matches the color of the door access panels.,
