I have this recently acquired 1949 Mercury M-47. The current screws are falling out, and are a mix of phillips and square socket oval heads. The screw heads also appear to be just barely large enough to cover the panel holes, with the square socket het screws being larger. I plan on inserting 10-24 stainless steel rivet-nuts in to the stripped out sheet metal thread holes, and 10-24 x 1/2 inch stainless steel oval head screws with either a flat blade or phillips head. Can anyone tell me what the factory correct screw head would be for a 1949 M-47?
48/51 used Ford Part 32924-S7 which is a cadmium plated #10 x 1/2 slotted binding head sheet metal screw with type "A" threads. These are coupled with a 34952-S7 cadmium plated#10 external countersunk lock washer.
In 51/52, things changed to the 35738-S8 zinc plated #10 x 5/8 cross recess (Phillips oval) screw & washer assembly.
Thank you. I was thinking the flat blade screwdriver type were the ACTUAL correct ones, but it seems most builds use whatever they have on hand to get the immediate job done. That is not what I am after. I do want the correct LOOKING fasteners, just done better so as to not have to deal with the continual crappy screw thread issues that plague 74 year old sheet metal. This girl is beautiful. She has just had some horrible things done to her that give her a bad image.. I want to correct that. She is an awfully bad girl though, and she wants to do some awfully naughty things that a vintage Mercury shouldn't do...something her older cousins indulged in. :-)
She looks nice . I hope you find the factory correct screws. For my 54 I bought "the correct " door panel screws from Mid Fifty. They fit. They worked. But they didn't match the original ones.
Are these the correct looking countersunk lock washer? For brevity, does anyone have a closeup pic of a 48,49,50 door panel fastened on the door with the correct hardware?
I think there may have been a running hardware change in 50. I seem to recall the access panel having the screws described above with the washers you show. I also have a 50 door in my stash that appears by all accounts to be original and untampered which shows a Phillips oval head screw with no washer.
I also believe that the panels were installed prior to painting, the panel removed for interior door assembly then reinstalled when complete. That way the doors, panels and screws would all be painted together. You can see there is no color behind the panel around the door hole.
Those screw heads really seem to fill the indentations in the access panel way more than the oval head screws in my door access panels.
Never mind the screws show us some more pics of that Mercury truck! Looks like you just got it at auction? Congratulations!
P.S. Weren't the counter sunk lock washers only used by the handles and crank on the door? I thought the access panel were just plain screws with no lock washers?

On my seemingly unmolested 49, the door panels didn't have any washrs just slotted screws.
So I went out and checked the screws in my 48 COE. It has the same Phillips oval head screws and no washers as the 50 doors above. Maybe it was a plant thing, slotted vs. Phillips?
