Transmission problems

Alright. So new problem on my 1991 ford f350 7.3 idi. 2wd. About 6 months ago I had my transmission replaced with a remanufactured unit. Drove around decent in town first 100 miles. Decided to take it on a 50 mile highway trip it overheated and vented. Shop looked at it replaced a couple things. Try to do the trip again same problem. Shop said it's the reman so they ordered another reman under warranty. New reman just installed can't get it to go into drive only reverse works. On a slight down hill grade the truck will not even roll forward in drive unless rpm is brought to 1000 rpm. Any ideas. On if it could be a sensor problem or anything else before going through another warranty. Torque converter was also replaced and coolers were flushed. 340d transmission. 4.10 rear differential.

sounds like the shop doing the swap does not know what they are doing, or the rebuilder does not know wheat he is doing.

Glad I'm not the only one thinking it... New age techs can't work on anything they can't put a scanner on 😂. Any ideas on where they could be messing up on the install side I just want it back on the road. Been out a truck 3 months now. If it's the rebuilders fault it's still warrantied.

Make sure the oil cooler lines are free flowing. If they are clogged or kinked, it'll overheat.
As for the shifting issue, have you checked for engine codes? Otherwise, pull off your ECU connector and check the resistance of the Manual lever position sensor (MLPS) in every shifter position against the "transmission circuit" on this chart. Use pin 30 and pin 46 on the 60-pin ECU connector.

as for the overheating they have since replaced the transmission. When I had it in my possession i personally checked for fluid flow in and out of both transmission lines at the transmission one at a time.

The current problem is when they installed the new transmission a few days ago they couldn't get the truck to go in drive. They had 3 mechanics look it over and couldn't find an issue. It goes into reverse just fine. The mlps was also new when the first transmission was installed. So less than 200 miles of use on it. Is it possible that they didn't align it right when swapping it over or damaged it in some way. That would still allow it to reverse but not go forward and keep it from rolling on a down grade in drive. I'm not familiar with the ins and out of an e40d yet

There is NOTHING electronic that can prevent it from shifting in forward gears. Even if the MLPS is way wrong and indicated reverse when in drive it will still go into forward gears. There is something wrong inside the transmission. If they are not pulling the trans again they are just wasting time.

Update

Since it's under warranty the shop could not disassemble. They are going to replace it again. 3rd times the charm right? Thank you everyone for the information trying to learn as much about this truck as possible to keep it alive as long as I can.

Alright thought this thread was going to the graveyard. Just got back with the mechanic. So the transmission goes into first in second when you manually shift it. But when in drive they say it seems to only try to go into second. Not sure why it took them this long to figure that out. But what are the thoughts as to why when it's drive it does not want to engage first but will engage manually just fine.

@Mark Kovalsky
ran across this thread in my search for answers given my new found information. It seems as though I'm dealing with the same problems. Should I stop them from trying to replace it and have them pin check the tcm and harness?

This thread talks about a trans that has no forward gears. That thread talks about a trans that has forward gears, but doesn't shift automatically.

Yours has the same problem? As which?
