Alright thought this thread was going to the graveyard. Just got back with the mechanic. So the transmission goes into first in second when you manually shift it. But when in drive they say it seems to only try to go into second. Not sure why it took them this long to figure that out. But what are the thoughts as to why when it's drive it does not want to engage first but will engage manually just fine.
@Mark Kovalsky
this is what I found out from the shop today they have a different mechanic working on it now. Given the information it is more likely trying to shift into 4th as they can't get it to drive in drive but shifts fine manually. First mechanics said it didn't shift into any forward gear.
Alright so some new information. Got the truck back yesterday. After going through a few different mechanics turn out the tcm connector that plug into the transmission was damaged and had to be replaced. It was shifting great and drove smoother than I have ever felt in that truck to date. However not even 20 minutes into having it back the output shaft seal not only started leaking but completely blew out. Not sure what would cause something like this to happen. Haven't had a chance to rip it apart yet. Any thoughts on what I should be checking for as far as what caused it?
As others mentioned, it sounds like the shop that originally swapped the transmission was run by a couple of jokers. The driveshaft seal could have been damaged when the transmission was installed. You could take it back to them, but would you want to? How fast is the transmission loosing ATF with the bad seal?
Alright so looking into some information for myself now...
this was the original transmission case code. As far as I can find this code doesn't match the codes for the replacement transmission that has been installed but the new transmission was vin matched. Should I be concerned.
Are you doing a concours restoration on your truck? If not, I figure any E4OD swapped into your truck should shift fine as long as it's setup properly. I don't know if there's a procedure to calibrate the FIPL on your IP. I do know that the E4OD used on diesel trucks is different than the ones used on gas trucks (number of torque converter bolts at least).
That part number is for the case casting, it is not the transmission number. It is meaningless at this point, it only meant something in the manufacturing process.
