Girlfriend has a 90 Bronco II (2.9L V6) with 180K. There is a small "electric motor" sound from the rear upon starting and during driving. Car has intermitten sputtering, stopping and delays in starting. Fuel filter just replaced with a 50% clog. Time for a new fuel pump (or car or girlfriend..kidding)? Is this a BIG job? Have manual, tools and mechanical ability. Is the pump in the fuel tank or outside? Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
The noise you hear is the in tank fuel pump running. I would start by testing the fuel pressure. The job is a bit of a pain since you have to drop the tank but I saw a post that you could search for about cutting a hole in the floor to get to it.
If you do drop the tank, siphon ALL the gas out first. I dropped the tank from my 86 Bronco II with about 6 gals left and it made it way more difficult to handle.
Some info that may help.On my 89 BII I cut a small access pannel with a dremal & tin snips just above the fuel pump. I than made a plate to conform to the ripple surface. I use machine screws to hold the plate down. This way I can easily check the connections or remove the fuel pump when needed. It has worked great for the last year & a half.
