I had my exhaust done for the second time and im happy with it. Anything above 60-65 it starts droning really really loud. Its ok when im by myself, but my girlfriend hates it, and i think ive scared a few little cars when i pass em..(they swerve all over lol).
Anyways its gotta be changed because of my new job and school, im driving a lot more on the highway. I would really like to keep the same sound if i could, and just quiet it down some in the cab somehow, and get rid of the high speed droning. Soo.... i need some motorheads to chime in and help me out.
Its my 94 f150, with the 300. Newer cat off the downpipes, 3" straightpipe that bends out right after the cab (most of the problem right there..). Now would it quiet it down to just run it behind the rear tire? Im afraid im gonna spend more $$$$ and it wont be quiet enough, because no muffler. Really need some opinions, 4 hour trip this weekend with the girlfriend!!! Need to take care of it, love the sound, but above 60, its too damn loud lol.
helpppp!!!
Thanks for the replys. Im afraid to just run the 3" behind the tire.. im not sure it will lower the droning enough. Any other opinions? Is this the only way for me to go because i like the sound as it is?
I would definitely install a performance muffler after the cat, and then run the pipe out behind the rear tire. If you think it sounds good now, it'll sound great with the proper muffler. And your girlfriend will be happy, which is priceless.
I have a Hooker AeroChamber on my Explorer and it sounds great. It's a V-6, so it may sound different on an I-6.....?
Muffler choice is very personal. Some like it loud, some not. Personally I like a 'medium' db with a deep tone, that's also quiet in the cab. Just do some research on the web, and choose the one you like best.
I just bought an Edelbrock SDT that I plan on installing on a Cherokee I-6, but can't comment on it just yet.....
I had a 95 F150 with the 300 I6. I replaced the down pipe with a walker pipe, back to a flowpro muffler, about the size of a Flowmaster Hushpower II, then y'd out over the axle straight back into 3"x18" slash cut tips. It was very quiet in the cab unless you wound the motor up to like 4K, but it had a real nice rumble/burbble at idle and it sounded like a truck. Most people mistook it for a bigger engine, and lots of people loved the sound. The dumping right at the cab is making most of the trouble for you. I would run it back into duals out the rear. Less noise in the cab and keeps the outside sound that you are looking for.
if you got the right glasspack it might make it quiet untill you stomp on it i have them on my 6.9 diesel and a 350 and its quiet unless you get on it i was guna put them on my 390 which has strait pipes that end behind the cab i dont have a girlfriend now but my best friends girlfriend says it really loud i like to scare kids as school i baught a set of glasspacks for it and put em on and its too quiet for me its loud when you get on it
