I have a 1978 F-100 and I’m looking to get a new battery for it, I currently have the completely wrong one in it and I was wondering if anyone knew what size battery these trucks were supposed to have from the factory. I’ve heard many different things, I’m really just looking for one that fits the battery tray and hold down the best.
I run a 24F. You can also run a 27F which is a bitter bigger. Make sure the positive and negative terminals are on the right sides or else you will be stretching your ground cable pretty far.
Cold cranking amps are not directly related to the group size of the battery. Try to get the highest CCA rating you can.
I used to use a group 24F .... a group 27F is bigger, I was gonna use one last time but decided to get all my Fords on group 65 batteries. I did add a new hold down of my own making. Group 65s are as big as group 27s. I did have to space the 65 up in the battery tray ... I used 3/8" plywood under it.
I gave up on my plan with the Mustang, just not enough room.
A little red battery terminal spray on coating, and I have a quart of DexIII/Merc just in case I need some ... stuffed there.
Made a top plate like protector / shelf of 3/8 plywood, painted it silver. No setting a wrench on a post now. I also replaced that first group 65.
