67 Cruise o Matic - Reseal, rebuild, replace or swap

Gentlemen,
I pulled my grandfather's 67 250 (352/auto no ps, no pb) out of a field recently. It had puttered around the farm for the last 16 years and the trans sprung a leak at least 15 years ago under my uncle's ownership.

When I found it, among many other issues, the trans was empty. I was told he'd just dump a little in and move it around. There was a massive leak spot under it. I pulled the pan and it was full of nasty gunk. Some jelled up fluid and a good amount of fine clutch material. I cleaned it out, cleaned filter, new pan gasket and new fluid.

In a short drive it does shift but still leaks like a screen door on a sub. Looks to be shift linkage and tail shaft at a minimum. I am unsure if the removed friction modifiers will make it slip in the near future.

Now the question. Reseal, rebuild, replace or swap. Its not a nice truck but it means something to me. I'd like it to be drivable, reliable and not a fix that it so far over the value of the truck I hate myself. The engine works fine, but it has some seriously leaking seals too. If I reseal the trans I'd probably pull the motor and reseal it too. I'm not married to the engine or the auto trans. Other plans are eventually add power disc brakes and maybe power steering. If we get it dialed in and enjoy it I'd add AC in a few years.

What are your thoughts?

Mine too! ‘67 w/ 300 inline 6.
leaky trans, leaky rear main seal on the motor. Last week I called the transmission shop for a quote if I delivered the transmission to their shop….$1500 for a rebuild??

Now I’m wondering how hard it would be to replace the tranny seals myself.

None of the Ford transmissions are difficult to work on. First you need to positively identify your transmission. The Cruise-O-Matic's aren't very well supported as far as hard parts go but most all soft parts are available. You may need to buy or borrow a clutch spring compressor and some seal drivers. You can use the Ford shop manual or a Haynes transmission manual for guidance. The Ford manuals assume you have all the tools the dealers had the Haynes manuals do not and show how to do it without most of them.
This is only one of a gazillion place that have parts. Trans Parts Online FMX FMX Transmission Parts
I need to add this. If the transmission has had a failure or the pan is full of clutch material, you need to have your converter overhauled or replace it because it will be full of stuff, and you cannot clean it out without cutting it open.
