Hi
I have a 1986 Ford F350 with a 460. I purchased it with a non-working speedometer. Today I learned the transmission has been swapped and has a (VSS) vehicle speed sensor. The issue is the speedometer on the dash is mechanical. Any suggestions on how to get a functioning speedometer out of this mess would be appreciated…
thank you
Larry
I’m not certain, but I’ll look so I can answer your question. Today by a mechanic he said it’s newer than the truck therefore the difference. I love the truck it’s sorta been patch worked! Lol
Manual…the speedo is definitely manual and the transmission is VSS. I guess I could just use the GPS on my phone 😵💫
You need to find out what the model of the transmission is. Some models had older brothers in earlier years that had a mechanical speedometer hook up. Sometimes you can retro-fit that to your newer transmission, sometimes you can't.

That is what I was thinking but we need to know the model of trans.

Are you sure?
I am thinking any manual transmission that uses VSS has to be a 5 speed over drive.
Then again does the trans have a granny first gear and you drive it like a 3 speed starting in 2nd gear?
Maybe a NP435 4sp or a T19 but dont think the T19 really had a granny first gear? or either had VSS?
See if you can post up pictures of both sides of the transmission.
Dose it have ant PTO covers?

Sorry guys I helped the neighbor yesterday building a hay and horse shelter. I haven’t crawled under my truck yet to get the make of model of the tranny. It does have a granny first gear and I start out in 2nd. I did find 2 cut wires coming out the side and zero places to screw in a mechanical speedo cable. When I do crawl under exactly what am I looking for? I’m not a mechanic at all…thank you
When you can tank a picture of the wires where they are on the trans as they might be for the backup light switch.
Speedo should be on the tail housing.
