Hello, I have a ‘93 5.0L V8 e-150. Im embarrassed to say but was recently in the desert and backed up over a pile of tumbleweed/soft wood. Wasn’t going fast, and I’m not sure if I backed up far enough for it to hit the trans, but I felt a thud and then all the sudden I had no reverse. It also doesn’t shift out of 1st until about 25-30mph then shifts hard into what I think is 4th. After that I can cruise at hwy speeds no problem. When stopping, it hesitates slightly to shift back down to 1st. The mechanic said it needs a rebuild, and that the no reverse issue is only caused by internal damage. There is no noise coming from the trans, like loose parts rattling or anything. When I shift into reverse, the engine sound changes ever so slightly, so it seems to be getting the message, just doesn’t click in to reverse. I can’t afford a rebuild, and don’t really have the setup to swap it myself which is probably above my pay grade anyways. Is it completely unrealistic of me to think that maybe a filter change/new valve body/new solenoid pack would help at all? Maybe the linkage? The linkage at the trans moves when shifting through (P,R,N,OD,D,1) but is there an adjustment of the shift linkage that might help? Everything looks in tact to me, and there were no signs of debris hanging underneath after I pulled forward and got out to check. Wondering if some debris may have shifted it out of whack. I can’t afford a replacement or rebuild so just wondering if replacing these parts would help. Apparently there are two different E40D models for this van, 1 with the code F2UP-CA and one without. Not sure which one I have, but if replacing solenoid/valve body would it make a difference when ordering parts?? Any help would be MUCH appreciated. Thanks!

Yes, that is completely unrealistic. If you want to spend the money go ahead, but I can promise you it will not fix the problem.

Here is a quick test that will tell if the linkage is working or not. Does it drive in OD? Does it hold or roll in park? If park and OD work as they should the linkage is working fine.

There were two automatics used, the E4OD and the AODE/4R70W.
It sounds like your trans guy knows what he is talking about. If the linkage is working as I described above, the problem is an internal failure inside the transmission.
