I have a 2000 f250 v-10 with a 5 speed manual. Every once in a while when I shift into reverse it grinds. Maybe 1 time out of every 20-30 shifts. I always shift from a stop and have not had a problem with any forward gears.
Put it in 3rd or 4th then shift directly to reverse. Putting it in a synchro forward gear stops everything in the trans. Shifting directly to R gets you into non-synchro reverse without grinding.
If your reverse is supposed to be synchro, then the synchro is worn or you are blowing past it. Same technique will work.
Thanks. I gave this a shot this morning. It seemed to go into gear easier but I may be making that up.
It also happens mostly when I am going from forward to reverse quickly (parking trailers mostly). That makes the worn synchro sound more likely. This trans is far from new but I like to keep myself out of the trans shop if possible....
