i have a 10.25in open rear end in my 7700 and was looking to intall the factory LS unit. How hard is it to do? i know some of you have done it before.
I have not seen the inside of this differential so i dont know how it comes apart. Will i need special tools, different ring and pinion, or do i just swap out the spider gears in the open diff.
i am a pretty good home mechanic with some special tools. i am currently putting my mustang back together from scratch, i just dont know how these differentials work. i have only taken apart the 9inch in the stang. If it sounds to involved for me to do after i hear some sort of explination i will definatly have a professional install it.
It takes more than the Shadetree will have. I don't have the tools to setup the rear, so took a gamble on the rear being right after the swap. The shims are custom cut from the factory and can't be altered so even if I did I wouldn't have been able to change it without a full shim kit.
With that said, I still needed several specialized and heavy duty tools to remove the carrier and swap over the ring gear, abs ring and pull the bearings and reinstall them. I would say short of machining your own engine block, setting up a rear is up there on the difficulty scale.
