I thought this was a ground wire but after cleaning it off it doesn’t seem like it would be. I am having trouble tracing it because the exhaust leak I had made everything black. Any ideas what this goes to and is for?
Being red, I'd say 12V power. Starter wire from the passenger battery maybe?
so does the starter connect to both batteries? Because it starts right up. Also will a scan tool from a high end brand like snapon work? or do i need the phone kind. Thank You
Most snap on scanners that I have seen are very capable at reading codes and pulling PID data. Ridiculously expensive also.
The starter is only wired from the passenger side. But who knows what that wire is for sure. I have seen people add on wire and not care about the color, so it is VERY hard to say. I am just guessing on the wire and the only way to know for sure is to trace it all the way back to the source.
I kinda figured that you still had starter function ........................ ALSO - I would assume that the wire is "hot", so be careful with it.
Okay. I just checked and unless they replaced the starter wire and left the old one there I dont know what it could be. Im going to through the scanner on tomorrow after I get home and I will let you know. Thanks again for all the help. Im still learning as I go and at the moment it seems like you learn the most owning a 6.0 since they always got something up with them. Thank again I really appreciate you takin time to help me out.

In addition to asking questions the Tech folder at the top of the forum has some great reading to do in your free time.
I'd also suggest that you be careful to follow up here with sufficient detail for these guys to keep up. For example, "I just checked and unless they replaced the starter wire and left the old one there I dont know what it could be." You need to tell these guys what you "checked." You'd be instructed to trace it back to its source. On a stock F-series, that shouldn't be too hard.
Not criticizing, just know from experience - these guys have been invaluable to me over many repairs on many trucks. They are methodical and great with details, but get easily frustrated with scatter-shooters leaving loose ends all through the diagnosis. They have a lot of people looking for their help, try to make it easy for them.
As for the wire, sure looks like the starter wire, and hanging from where that wire would be. Also, it all looks OEM. While red, the way it's dangiing around all those metal contact points, I expect it would have shorted whatever out by now. My guess is that someone swapped in a replacement cable without removing the old one. Which isn't good, I think. I'm rusty on Fseries, but expert that there are mounting points for that cable, so that it doesn't get damaged or chafed, and the new cable isn't using them because the old one is. Red flag that the PO was lazy and that you should expect other repairs to be substandard.
@IHateCommieCars - your recommendation to check out the MAP hose, and possibly the EBP tube, are spot on also, so that is a high priority.
That said, with an '03, he may have the "Inferred EBP flash", so the EBP tube being clogged may not be a big issue - unless he is tuned. So - I would look into the MAP hose first and do it ASAP. No cuts, tears, holes, and not plugged. The nipple that the hose connects to should be clear from clogging also (run a thin wire into it).
The data to see (in order of priority):
Codes
Then KOEO data for:
BARO
MAP
EBP_G
EBP_G_Inf (this will identify the inferred EBP strategy).
Both batteries and the alternator are brand knew. I’m at school right now so once I get home I will look through and try to check out everything y’all are saying to. I really appreciate all of the feedback and I am sorry if I am not giving enough detail. I’m trying my best to explain what I’m seeing but I’m not the best at it. Thanks again. I’ll keep y’all updated when I get home. I will be throwing a code reader on it today. Also that last time I drove it the dash, radio and windows went out. I was reading that the cause of that is a sensor that goes bad and I seen that you could bypass that. Could the dash not communicating cause the truck to run like ****?
