No reason I can think of for plugs and wires to be that expensive. But who knows these days. With the cost of everything. It seems my budget changes way more often these days on just about everything. Lost a bid on a job because we raised the price after 3 months of client deciding. I told them I am sorry but the old quote is out dated and our cost to even get crew on site has went up. Good luck man good luck.
I would hope this engine makes it 200-300k miles like all it's gas predecessors I've owned.

someone else might be able to chime in on this, but from what the service manager told me, it doesn't sound like you can just replace the cam and be good. These are pushrod engines, but are much different than the old school 302's, 300's and 351's.

Me too this is exactly the reason i bought it as I usually run a vehicle until its done. I had a 94 last and it was still going strong at 300k. I had replaced the water pump and some other miscellaneous stuff but nothing major besides belts and plugs wires typically the small stuff over the years. I didn’t want to sell it but had a friend in a jam so i did. He had it for 2 years and decided he would get into the rv scene so he bought a f350 . He sold truck the guy has it and still problem free. The elec windows fell off the track on driver side i fixed that. Had to replace the 4wd system but that was only major problem . Fuel pumps. Blah blah blah. Farm used and worked daily driver. If it had 4 doors and could have hauled hay and my equipment i would still be driving it today. Surely this engine will last. I know you never know for sure. But i hope this is a fluke. Vehicles are just to expensive to buy new all the time. I am starting the research for the wifes next vehicle. She is finally leaning Towards a f150 truck. I think she is leaning that a truck around the farm is much better. She has a car now and she invest in many plants so car is not the best lol.

$5k for labor to install I would be learning how to rebuild a pushrod v8 if I didn't already know. You can almost buy 2 crate motors for what they want to replace one.

Another F250/F350 truck. With a truck that is out of warranty I would have them change the cam and install all new lifters if the cylinders aren't scored. Perform a short oil change and call it good.

Isn't the labor rates at dealerships around $150/hour. It adds up quick. Had a EBP sensor replaced on my truck recently and couldn't believe the cost.

the way these guys are pricing everything, what you just described, would cost a lot more than a new engine and with a new engine, I get a warranty.

If they're going to charge $1100.00 for changing 5 spark plugs, I'd need to clean out my 401k to have enough money for them to change a cam.

Just turned 80,000 today I have gone through two sets of tires, 16 oil changes with 17 due now. Front brake pads recently and a #2 spark plug wire. I just ran it across the Rockies and half of Kansas and back this week. 1700 miles, towing a 16' 2 axle steel enclosed, loaded out, empty back. I ran it 81-82 on the interstate and as much as I could get away with in the mountains. 11 mpg for the trip. Comfortable and capable. No problems with mine thankfully.

7.3 is a pretty nice gas power platform. I figure by year end with the driving I've been doing should have over 130k miles.

I just purchased extended service plans for two of the 3 2021's we have (the 3rd is in for an engine replacement). I suggest everyone else do the same. $13k for an engine replacement after a $3,000.00 diagnosis, is not what I expected for a gas engine.
I expected to get more life out of these than 129,000 miles. Hopefully you guys have better luck than I did. But I'm covered now. I should get a warranty on the new engine and I'm getting a 60,000 mile service plan on my other two trucks (they both have less than 80,000 miles).

You are so happy and confident in it that you won't drive it beyond warranty?

Are all of the sparkplug wires the same? I wonder if a guy should carry a spare if so.

Depending on your build date, yes you should. There have been 4 revisions since 2020 in the pickup version. If you are under warranty and have a failure Ford is supposed to replace all 8 under a TSB. Replace the bad wire then drive it to the dealership and put the bad wire back in to get them replaced.

If you are outside of warranty just buy them from Rockauto for half off the dealership price.

Yes, they are all interchangeable, the same part number. The latest is the "D" revision, of which I purchased 9, so I have a spare if I am in out of the way place if it fails.
