My dad found his timing chain to be very loose on his 330. It has actually jumped a tooth. Are the timing chains for the FE and FT the same? I know the gear sizes and chain length are equal but will an FE timing set throw the cam off?
speaking of crank snouts, i was reading where there's 2 different sizes on 360's or 390's........which one's had which size? i saw this when going through an auto parts store on line under their crank listings, or were they just refering to the diff between fe's and ft's ?
if the lower gear is bigger the top one would have to be twice the increase bigger too.... you sure their not the same size? also could the two part numbers be for the nylon gear and the steel one?
The lower gear could have the same outer diameter, but that would leave less material in the gear. Seems backwards for a heavy duty motor. but, then again, these were not high revving motors.
That would be my idea Greg. The FE gear fits tight all the way back to its position and there can't be anyway to get it onto an FT crank as it is bigger. I will do some research. I know the top gear on the FT can't be too much bigger as it wouldn't fit under the timing cover.
I went out and looked in the garage.....and found an FT crank ( 391 ) with the crank sprocket on. It had about .500 of material between the bottom of the channel that the chain rides on and the snout. Plenty strong. If memory serves, some 330s were medium duty and had the smaller FE sized snout, you dad's truck could be either way. I think the cam gear and the chains are the same size. My 391 has a double bicycle style chain- I don't know if the FTs have a silent chain available or not. DF
