ok, 1988 ranger 4x4 2.9 rebuilt 17 years ago with 155,000 miles. i bought brand new, other than extreme heat or cold the temp gauge reads at the m in normal. almost never moves unless im climbing a long hill with a load, so recently after fully warmed up its barley above the l? i noticed a few months ago, the heater still works good? any ideas? i guess its better than running to hot?

ThermoStat possibly stuck open, causing Engin to never get up to normal operating temp.
How long since last CoolingSystem service; needed every 33kMiles\4Years?
* Drain+Flush
* New ThermoStat
* New RadCap
* Swap HeaterCore Connections
* New 50/50 Coolant
* Burp Air
With 150kMiles+ on Radiator+Pump+FanClutch+Hoses+Clamps, consider renewing those also.
The temp sender is called a thermistor and is designed to read in the middle under any normal condition with movement to the top or bottom only in extreme conditions. If it gets consistent readings on the low side, a new thermostat is usually required. If the readings are on the high side, it could indicate any number of issues. As long as the heater works like it was a new vehicle I would not worry about anything. Congratulation on owning a high mileage 35 year old Ranger.
Check the upper hose from a cold start monitoring how the temperature changes. It should pretty much stay cold with barely any heating until the thermostat opens. If the temp climbs slowly, the thermostat is open already and not keeping the coolant from circulating.
If you need a new, get a brand name, Stant, Gates, Motorcraft, etc. A cheap thermostat will not give any sort of confidence that it will work. A cheap thermostat is false economy for the most part.
