4.9 running too cold?

I have a 92 F150, 2wd, 4.9 liter engine, AT. I had the truck checked by a mechanic when new - among other things, the mechanic said that the engine wasn't getting up to temp, and recommended replacing the thermostat.

Following the inspection, the seller told me that he replaced the thermostat, and gave me a receipt for the part, but I don't know for certain he actually replaced it.

Truck still seems to run cold. Takes forever to warm up enough to defrost the windows, and the temp guage never gets more than about 1/4 of the way across the dial. Haven't driven it in hot weather though.

I would be interested in knowing where the temp in other trucks run? Is this normal?

Thanks,
Russ

The truck should run at 195 degrees or so.

Replace the thermostat w/ a new Motorcraft stat & let us know what happens.

Many times people think that they should install a colder thermostat, but that is not good, it is possible that they changed out and put the wrong one in.

Replace it with a 195 as stated before, do not go with a cooler one, as it affects emission and mileage.

I am running a Ford 192 (hey it's what they gave me) and my temp gauge doesn't even get up to the N. But after hooking up a comp to it, it says it's running at 193.... for what it's worth.

I meant to say that I had the truck inspected when I bought it (about 2 months ago), not when new.

From what I have seen in the past, the majority of Ford trucks out there don't show the temp going any further then just past the "N" on the guage reguardless of the year of the truck and the size engine under the hood. If the truck feels cold and heat takes long to warm up, then your best bet would be to replace the thermostat. Good luck.
