96 2.3 ranger running cold
I have a 1996 super cab 2.3 4cylinder 5 speed trans. with 47000 miles. Temp Guage always sat rock solid just above the hash mark for "C" at the cold end. Couple of weeks ago I noticed the temp was moving up and down from the mid point on the gauge to cold so I did the following:
All new hoses
New NAPA thermostat
Flush system with system flush
Installed new Temp Sender for computer
Spent $150.00 on a code reader, found no codes in memory.
This reduced the gauge bouncing around, but it still moved around a bit and when I would open the heater core for heat the gauge would drop into the cold area of the gauge very quickly and would not come back up.
Replaced the Temp. Sending Unit for the Gauge on the dash and now the temp is right were it should be and rock solid.
I hope this helps if you have the same problem.

My bet is that your truck is also going to run a little better, too, and maybe even get a little better gas mileage, since the new Engine Coolant Temp (ECT) sensor (the first sensor you replaced) and the new T-stat will allow for better engine managment & control by the computer.
