Hey guys need a little help with a project. I motor and tranny swapped my 1989 f150 i went from a 4.9l 300 with a c6 to a 1995 5.8l with an e4od I’ve got the motor and trans all in and running but the trans seems to be confused as to what it wants to do. I can get 1st and 2nd gear but if I click into drive it free revs with very minimal engagement. Also if I put it just into drive and take off it just starts in drive doesnt down shift to 1st and up to 2nd. The way it was acting it felt like the trans was junk so I got it rebuilt and still the same issue. Is there anything that I might’ve over looked in the wiring harness that I didn’t splice in that could be causing it not to shift? The only thing that I can think of is the vss in the rear diff but as far as I know that’s just for the Speedo and Abs feel free to throw any ideas out I’ve been chasing this far to long and had to turn to here to see if anyone else has done a similar swap with the same issues… thanks!

The VSS is critical for the transmission to work correctly. Without the VSS, the ECU doesnt know what to do with the transmission or shifting.

Ok perfect In my other 1989 f250 I just knew all the vss was for us the abs since it’s got a vacume controlled c6 and assumed it was the same but That’s the direction I’ll be working towards the. thanks! Do you know if in the 1995s the vss is tied through the Speedo too and if so can I bypass it straight to the pcm considering the Speedo in the 89 dash is a mechanical versus the electronic in the 95s?
Before doing anything you should check for codes. There will be several codes stored that will show you where you need to look for the wiring problems that you have.

The VSS feeds raw speed signals to the ABS computer and the programmable speedometer odometer module (PSOM). The Speedometer conditions the signal and converts it's to 8000 pulses per mile and sends it to the cruise control module and the ECU. The ECU uses the signal to determine transmission's shift points, based on vehicle speed, engine rpm, and engine load.
The ECU has logic to allow the transmission to shift without the conditioned PSOM signal but, as you found out, it doesn't do it well.
You need to have the PSOM installed in the truck for everything to work right. The PSOM is part of the instrument cluster, but I think it can be removed and tucked under the dash somewhere. It's about the size of a deck of cards.

ok I’ll start by finding a psom in the junkyard tomorrow thanks a lot been a huge help I’ll let ya know what I figure out!
Hey guys back with an updated I got a Speedo and was able to fit it into my 89s gauge cluster with a little persuasion from a die grinder and tapped it into my vss and wired it into my eec and got her working I have all my gears now and it gave me a Speedo again so thanks a lot for the help woulda taken me a while to search out that one on my own I appreciate it!
