Hello,
I have a 1995 f150 with the 5.8 and e4od trans. I have been trying to get this truck in top top shape and one of the last things on my list is an annoying transmission issue. Overall the truck shifts great aside from a hard shift into drive with a slight delay in engagement. Reverse snaps into gear immediately. Truck has around 230,000 miles. Any ideas what the problem could be would be greatly appreciated. I am really trying to learn how to diagnose/repair my own truck so I have not taken into a shop yet. Fluid looks good from what I can tell. Thanks for all input!
I would predict some slack in the first gear planetary gear set where it locks into the case. It *could* be low pressure in the pump, but on the E4OD, that usually manifests itself as a delay in reverse engagement, not drive. Either way, it's a transmission teardown to fix it.
I would also verify how much slop you have in the rear axle. Excessive clearance between the pinion and ring gear is common. Also worn spider gears and axle shafts can all add up to quite a bit of rotation in the pinion gear. At 230k miles it's time to give that rear axle some love as well.
Mine *SLAMS* into reverse. It is not the transmission, it is the rear end.
You'll have to jack the wheels up, check for slop in each axle, driver shaft and u-joints.
