Somehow I missed the suggestion to replace the PIP or ICM. To be clear, is the ICM the grey piece attached to the distributor? Also, where is the PIP?

That is correct.

Thanks for the part number. Do you or anyone else have the number for the ICM?

Which of the parts should be my priority? Replace them both or one then the other?

Therein lies the paradigm. Given you are getting only Code 212 I would be inclined to replace just ICM and use the correct heat sink compound. But then again the age of the PIP/Stator and it's habit of dying when warmed up you are probably better off replacing it too. So start with the ICM and heat sink compound. If the Code 212 is resolved then do the PIP. If the code is not resolved...then also replace the PIP/Stator.

Well, they did not make black modules in 1991
Yours would have been grey, and that is a Motorcraft DY 425
1992 - 1996 some were black, not all

The ignition diagnostic monitor code 212 can be there on any OBD1 regardless of module type

There may have been black TFI modules prior to 1991
The Tempo Topaz / Taurus Sable TFI recall had us use black ones on a few of those I think

DY425 was superseded by DY1074

1993 and earlier trucks use the gray colored Push-Start style Ignition Control Module. There are two different versions.

One is distributor mounted

Motorcraft - DY1074 (supercedes DY425)
Ford - 5U2J-12A297-AA, 5U2Z-12A297-A
Wells - F121
Niehoff - FF409
BWD - CBE24
Standard - LX218
NapaEchlin - TP31
Delphi - DS10051
Transpo - FM425
MSD - 83648 (Made by Transpo above)

I agree 100%. For 1994 and above trucks it is typically caused by the wrong ICM. Verify which one is installed then proceed accordingly.

I'm a little confused by the dialogue above. To help clarify: my truck has a grey ICM. Also worth noting is that, to my knowledge, the distributor is not the original. I believe the previous owner told me that he had replaced it. So, which part numbers should I be looking for exactly?

Second question; what is heat sink compound?

It's the goo that you spread on the back side of the ICM before mounting it to the distributor or heat sink (remote mounted ICM). Many of the ICMs these days come with a packet of dielectric grease. It's not the same thing and should be discarded, then apply real heat sink compound.

I've been out of town and just getting back to this.

So, I replaced the ECM and when reinstalling the distributor I had it 180 degrees out of sync (I had taken it apart and didn't think to pay attention to how it was aligned when I pulled it). When trying to realign the timing I was having trouble (obviously with it 180 out of alignment) I heard a pop and saw a small whisp of smoke rise over on the passenger side of the engine compartment. I couldn't see what the smoke came from with certainty but then found that the top of the map sensor had blown right off. I can't start it right now and so I pulled the codes with the engine cold they are 558 and in memory 121 and 452. Should I just go ahead and replace the MAP sensor assuming that's what smoked?
