Post Trouble Codes on '91 Ranger

My local parts store loans/sells code readers for Fords, so I took advantage of this when the "Check Engine" light on my '91 Ranger came on regularly. Among the codes detected were in KOEO mode, 87( a fuel pump fault), 14, (PIP Circuit Failure), 18,( SPOUT Circuit open),31, (EVP Sensor voltage low), and 88, (loss of dual plug input control).

In the KOER test, the codes detected were 98, (Hard Fault FMEM Mode) and 18,(SPOUT Circuit open)

Until very recently, the truck has manifested no symptoms, but within the last two weeks or so it's begun to run rough when accelerating in 1 st and 2nd gear(manual)

I am the second owner, the first owner told me he'd replaced the plugs, but not the plug wires; that seems to be a common sense place to start.

If the above mentioned codes suggest a diagnosis to anyone, I'd be most grateful for your suggestions or insights.

By the way, forgot to include, it's a 2.3 L four cylinder engine. I also noticed the plastic case is cracking away from the passenger side coil pack. Is this the one that fires at the top of the compression stroke?

On the KOEO codes you need to define if these are really KOEO codes or continuous codes, I suspect that some of these are continuous. You should address the codes in this order, KOEO, KOER, then continuous. These codes refer to pinpoint tests that should be run to determine the exact repair, you can get them at larger libraries. The 98 code is because it didn't pass KOEO and it's running in fault mode. My feeling is that you have two main problems, ignition and EGR, the fuel pump probably is not a big issue.

You are correct: I ran the codes again and codes 18 and 88 came up in continious memory and only code 98 in KOER. KOEO showed code 11, passed.

I don't think you should get a 98 if it passed the KOEO test but I think the 18 is your main problem.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 23-Mar-02 AT 10:53 PM (EST)]Maybe the spout connector is unplugged, or partially plugged?

Codes 18 and 88 both refer to the EDIS. I would suspect an ignition module going bad. Does the tach give erratic readings? If so, it's probably the module.

First off, I'd like to thank everyone for taking time to comment.
A question to loneranger: is the spout conector you discuss the sensor in behind the timing belt cover? that looks like a bear to get at, let alone fix. I haven't noticed tach fluxuation, but the rough running in 1,2, 3 gear is increasing. The coil pack on the passenger's side does look kinda shaggy(insulation breaking away) but I'd still like to wait til a little better weather and try plugs and wires first.

Well, plugs and wires were not the answer; still getting the same codes.

Like I said in my first post, run the pinpoint tests, it will save you from replacing good parts but if the module is cheap....

I think the code 88 is the clue (Loss of dual plug control). This is almost certainly caused by a faulty ignition module. They are about $95 US from AutoZone.
