Is it possible to lift the lifter out the top of the cylinder head through the pushrod passage? The plan is to; remove valve cover, remove rockers, remove pushrod, then pull the lifter up with a grappling tool.
Don't think it's rod knock. The engine only has 60k on it. The noise seems to be coming from behind the spark plug #8 cylinder. At highway speeds the engine is very smooth. Really can't hear it on the right side or at the oil pan.
If you think it is just a lifter tick
Run a quart of trans fluid through it in the engine oil
See if that does not dislodge any debris in the lifter
If you need a lifter, it is cam and lifters time
With only 60k, I sure would try to flush it first and visually inspect that valves movement
To further diagnose run the engine with the valve cover off and look closely at the push rods. If a pushrod is not spinning the cam lobe and lifter are toast.
Check the air tube for the smog pump connection, bolts in behind the valve cover near the corner of the head, not sure if your problem was resolved or if you have these smog parts on your vehicle but applying very minimal rtv and bending the clips to get a tighter connection fixed an identical problem that i was having. i believe there is some sort of paper o ring on there orginally that may have worn out.
Closing out this thread with some good news. Pulled the valve covers and turned the engine over with the starter watching the valve / rocker arms for any obvious damage ( don't forget to pull the ignition relay!). Everything went up and down ok with nothing lose, stuck, or bent. Ran a flush through the engine for about 20 minutes then an oil and filter change. Replaced 1qt of 10/30 with a qt of Risole Compression Repair and went for a gentle 100 mile drive. Things are much quieter.
