on the way home from work, while turning in m driveway, a horrible clatter came out from under the hood. i thought perhaps a lifter had gotten stuck. i removed the cover from the pass. side, and found that a rocker was loose.
(from the firewall 0-x-0-0-0-0-0-0. )the pushrod is not bent. the rocker fulcrum bolt was tight. but i could push the pushrod a good 1/8th in. into its home. this probably isnt a good thing. it's dark now, and i havn't removed the head to see what's the matter. what should i be expecting.?
b.t.w. i could manually force the pushrod, it felt spongy..?
thanks ahead of time.-jeff
i removed the head, and found that the lifter is really spongy when you apply pressure. where would i find a tool to remove lifters? how do i use them? what am i looking for as far as damage? could the lifter just crap out? what type should i replace it with. i know its a hydraulic valve lifter. i feel like i have one of these in my engine
Napa or Autozone should have something they can rent or loan to you. A magnet might work but if the lifter is gummed up it might give you trouble coming out.
so far it looks like it was just the lifter. i put the head back on, and wa getting ready to put in manifold gaskets when the skyies opened up on me. hopefully i'll have it all together tomorrow, along with an oil change. then we'll see if she starts and runs okay. thanks for the input. it was helpful.
got her all together. after messing around with the timing she started, and blew a ton of crap out of he exhaust. changed the oil. ran her around for an hour. all seems to be good. thanks. i couldn't find a lifter tool. bt the lifter was roached so i yanked her out with a pair of needle nose.
