For web surfing I prefer a good old fashion computer and key board. Apps have their place and I have an ocean full on my phone but not so much for browsing. Even when I do browse the web on mobile, I always use the desktop mode.
^^^ Same here partially because I don't need or want any sort of internet on my flip phone. When I'm out and about being in near constant availability via the 'net would get in my way, most likely bogging me down with unnecessary distractions.
Apps are nothing more than a way for you to view a web page that you could already view but now you get to enter into a legal agreement and get another password.
My cell phone is MY cell phone. I give the number out sparingly and as a result get a SPAM call about once a month. I don't install commercial apps on it, either. I don't care if installing the Wendy's app gets be a free hamburger. It's worth giving up the free $5 burger to not have Wendy's advertising hit my phone.
My wife feels the other way. She has pages of apps, many which share her phone number. She typically get 4-6 SPAM calls a day. Over a month she's dealing with 150 SPAM calls while I have one!
I won't pay someone to not spam me. But I won't let them pay me to spam me, either. An FTE app may be harmless, but there's no guarantee that it won't "evolve" a year from now to be something that I would wish hadn't been installed on my phone.

That's odd you say about spam calls as I have a ton of apps on my phone but rarely get any spam calls, maybe once a week? Well I do screen my calls so if one comes in I don't recognize I let it go to voice mail. No message and that number goes straight to my blocked caller list. I've got all the local eateries, Wendy's McD's etc, all the major shopping apps, Home Depot, Walmart, Office Depot, etc... banking apps, CC apps, Home automation apps etc on top of etc. If there's an app for something that interests me, I've got it. Just checked, I have 233 apps on my phone.
I've recently begun dabbling in IFTTT apps for the aforementioned home automation I use. My home is like something off Star Trek as far as automation goes, I want my lights on inside or out, lock/unlock the front door, arm disarm the security system, etc, etc, etc all by voice control. If it starts raining, my weather station in the back yard will send a push message to my phone lol.
Washer/dryer, oven, home hvac, garage door you name it I've got it and an app for it. But not for surfing the web other than the regular apps called Chrome, Firefox, Edge and what ever the phone came with. My wife was ready to divorce me over all the technology I've put in the house when I first started but now she loves the convenience. She told me I better outlive her because she'd be SOL if I go 1st and the home network goes whacky. I smiled and told her, Geek Squad.
Thought is, a business demands your phone number, just leave. They sell them. You get tons of harmful Spam calls, threats, arrests, threatening Lawsuits. You can also shoot the Cell phone or Shut it off. You know early morning, late afternoon, for an hour are the only real time of the week you need one. If it wasn't for my Ipad I would leave it shut down in a drawer somewhere.
