I have a few questions about converting my 1986 f150 302 efi 2g alternator to 3g.
1- What amp 3g do I need? 90 or 130
2- I’ve seen a10mm and11mm pivot bolt hole and a 10mm and 8mm adjuster bolt hole on the 3g so I’m not sure which I need.
3- Do I need the 7” or 8.25” mounting hole spacing?
A 95 amp is plenty big enough and may not cause belt slipping problems.
If you have time and do not need the truck, I would take the old alternator off and stick the new one on and stare at it to see what you need. You might be able to use the old bolts with some spacers.
FWIW, recently I had to replace the Alt on my 86' 302EFI. The newer replacement has a different connector that eliminates the issue. That was easy. The old guys at the local auto parts store, changed over the pulley from the old to the new ALT.
Don't forget to get a 3 wire connector for the voltage regulator. Feel free to try the original 2 wire connector, I did and it didn't charge. Just trying to save you a trip back to the auto parts store.
If you go with the 90 amp ALT, I would consider further derating the output by using a 60 amp circuit breaker or fuse. This way you can keep the original wiring and the amp meter will still work.
good luck, Jim

Thats probably what I’ll do. I’ve been working a lot of 12 hour days so I was trying to get everything ordered on my lunch breaks but I don’t want to have to send something back if I get it wrong. Thanks for responding.

Here's the new one.
Here's the old one.
Thanks for replying. Do you remember the brand? I had a new one in the garage but ended up selling it to a guy at work because it was the same as my original. I can definitely see the difference at the connector on the one you have.

I ordered one yesterday but that is a good reminder. I’ll have to look into what I would need to do to reuse my gauge. I’ve read somewhere that there is a replacement that will read volts instead of amps but I haven’t checked into it yet.

I looked on line to the local auto parts stores around me. Napa didn't have any. Advance could test mine, but told me to go to the Carquest down the street to get the one I needed. That Carquest is now a NAPA. I do know that Carquest store had been in that spot for decades, going back to the 1970's.

Thanks. I’ll check into it. We used to have an old auto parts store that later became a car quest. It was in a very old brick building from before 1900 in town. It had old wooden floors and a big display window in the front. I used to like going in there because they had old stock from the 70s-80s. We also have an old Ford dealership about 10 minutes away that I recently bought an NOS distributor and ignition module from.
I do miss those old day's. I still remember what the inside of the auto parts stores in Portsmouth, NH looked like back about 1973. Some of those were also in a very old bldg's.
I also just put a bigger battery in my 86' in case you're thinking about that. That post was updated yesterday
Here is the info on the volt meter conversion https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...olt-meter.html
