'50 headlight switch removal

I'm trying to replace my headlight switch. The shop manual says you push in a spring-release button on the switch and then remove the **** and shaft.

With the switch installed in the dash I'm having a hard time finding the "button". Does anyone have a picture of the switch that's not installed so I can see where the button is located? Thanks,

Here's a 53-55 switch. See the button.

This a 48-52 switch. Looks like the button is on the bottom.

Hi Dan. My "spare" switch is supposed to be for a 52:

The spring loaded button is on the left. It would be orientated toward the floor of the cab with the switch installed. Depressing the button allows you to remove the ****. With the **** removed, you can unscrew the bezel that holds the switch in place.

Good luck. As you are working on your truck, you must still have it. Did you have a change of heart about selling it, or are your just doing some repairs before putting it on the market?

Thanks, Abe. I don't think the switch I have looks like either of them. This is the best picture I could get of it.

Jim, that looks a bit like what I've got (see response to Abe above) but there's no button on the bottom of mine. I'm thinking maybe the switch I have is from a '49 F-1 and I need to find the slot to insert a screwdriver.
I'm getting the truck ready to list on Hemmings Auction. The light switch works intermittently. The headlights didn't work when I took the truck out this afternoon but after I parked it and pulled out the switch the lights went on. I went to show my wife that they were working again and they wouldn't go on. I ordered a new switch from Carpenter tonight.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. Your switch is definitely different. When the replacement switch comes, hopefully you'll see how it works. Good luck with the sale. You'll probably be out and about driving your Model A soon.

The 48-50 switch doesn't have a button. Instead, there is a slot on the underside that is aligned with the slot in the lip in the dash. Your picture clearly shows the feature.

The **** shaft is held by a flat spring on the switch body that is keyed to the shaft.

With the switch **** in the off position, use a flat blade screwdriver inserted in the slot to push up and toward the firewall. While doing this, twist the **** and it will release.

Thanks guys for all the responses. Like FortyNiner said, you have to compress a spring by pressing it toward the firewall with a screw driver. That is, once you find it. It's hard to get a flashlight to shine where you need it to see the spring. Anyway, I got the shaft out and unscrewed the nut holding the switch to the dash. I haven't disconnected the wires yet because I want to have the new switch in hand so I can move one wire at a time.

For future reference in case someone's searching this thread, here's what the '49 - '50 switch looks like without any button.

The spring that holds the shaft:

The bottom of the switch - the thing that looks like a button is the rivet holding the spring to the case;

The top with the wiring attached:

Thanks Dan. I'm glad Ford improved it for 53-56 trucks.
