1950 Headlight Switch

I'm trying to replace the wiring in my truck, and I can't get the silly headlight switch out of the dash. The shop manual says there's a button to press down to remove the **** and shaft -- does anyone know specifically where this is? Also, any suggestions on where to find the tool to remove the mounting nut? Thanks...

Just thought I'd put my two cents worth in - that headlight switch has to be "on" or pulled all the way out BEFORE you push the button or you'll be pulling on it all day. Have fun!

Aha -- apparently, I have a '49 switch (no button on top, but I pushed in the bronze thingie on the front & the shaft came out). Thanks!

48 to 50 use a type of switch that has a slot in it that you have to use a small screwdriver to move the piece that the **** goes thru. It looks like a piece of spring steel. You also have to turn the **** and pull to get it to release. It's a pain. When you put the **** back in, you have to turn the **** to lock it in again. The 51 and later switches use the "button", a much better and easier switch to remove. You can use this switch in the 48-50 trucks. The only real difference is the later ones have a reostat and a fuse on them.

kool info... Fortunate or unfortunate depending how you look at it.. My 49 has headlight switch that you will most often find in the help section of your parts house.. When I do the wiring on my truck I will be replacing all the switches with stock ones.. so this is good info..
