Putting a new clutch between my Y-block and T98 transmission. The 1955 and 1959 carefully avoid mentioning grease on the splines of the clutch disc and transmission input shaft. The Duralast generic installation instruction talk about a small amount of spline grease from the provided packet. But no packet was in the box.
I would grease it. But use VERY little grease to do it. Centrifugal forces are significant and any excess grease in there WILL end up on the clutch plate material.
I have mercruiser Out Drive spline grease, but any good wheel bearing grease is probably ok. a thin coating is fine. NO GLOBS.....
My personal preference is to very lightly grease. Rust inhibitor, lube for disc to move on splines during operation and helps when stabbing the nose into the disc and bearing / bushing in the flywheel.
Thanks all. Greasing fits with my inclination as well. I was just surprised that both manuals don't mention it while going into detail on lubrication of the pilot bearing/bushing and, on bigger trucks, dabbing a bit of grease inside the pressure plate assembly where it takes the rotational load. I have a high-temp clingy grease in-stock that will do the job well.
By the way, if one polls the internet-at-large on this topic, all sorts of crazy practices pop up.
