Fuel or electrical

Hi
I have a 96 f250 7.5 that starts and runs but shuts itself off when it gets to operating temp. I've just done a tune up on it. I've replaced the fuel pump relay as well as the fuel pressure regulator and still have this issue. Any suggestions would be welcome

When it dies, does it restart? If not, do you have to wait for it to cool down?

I have to wait for it to cool down. It seems like it wants to start but just won't

Hello, and welcome to the FTE forum.
YOu have a 1996 f250; If it's a federal truck, you have OBD-1 and you can read trouble codes with a paperclip. If it's a California truck, you have obd-2 and you'll need a scan-tool to read trouble codes.
So first thing to do is to read your trouble codes since it'll give you a idea of where to look.

Here is an easy to follow procedure to retrieve codes if you have a federal truck. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...aper-clip.html

Next thing you should do is check your ECT sensor with a multimeter and see if it falls in the resistance range for the engine temperature. I like to check it when the engine is cold and when it's hot or causing problems. Here is the resistance table. If you need more help with testing the ECT sensor, just ask.

I've got an obd1 reader but im getting the all pass code from it. I can check that sensor but im not sure why that sensor would cause the truck to shut itself off while I'm driving down the road. It's shut itself off and then fired back up almost instantly. Could those symptoms still be that sensor. Also this has been a gradual problem sometimes taking hours to happen but now it's about 10 minutes at an idle

Have you tried the key on-engine running (KOER) test? It's the same as the Key on-engine off (KOEO) TEST except you start the engine. There's a few driver-input ideosycrocies to get a code free result, but even if you don't input them, it might give you a code to look into.

It depends on how it dies. If it start over-fueling, choking, stumbling, and then dies, I would look into the ECT sensor. If it's an instant cut-off, I would look into ignition.

I will try getting codes while it's running. Thank you. I did replace the ignition module with no positive results.

Have you checked the fuel pressure?

The ignition module you changed? Black Motorcraft or something else?

ICMs & PIP sensors have a history of dying with heat & the time it takes to run again gets progressively longer.

Don't always leave a code.
