Hi, has anyone installed an access panel in the bed to access the fuel pump(s)? I’m looking to see what a nice clean and water resistant install might be. I’d like to be able to easily change the pump on the fly if needed. These systems and parts are starting to wear out and the odds of replacement parts not lasting near as long is pretty high.
I'd advise against cutting a hole in the bed. It's messy and never are completed as cleanly as they should be. It's easier to just drop the tank (or jack up the bed) and install a good quality pump. If you're truly concerned about reliability, install a fuel pressure gauge on your dash to monitor the fuel pumps performance before it it degrades far enough to cause a problem.
Clean and water resistant for what purpose? Both sides of the bed are exposed to the weather. I second not butchering the bed and doing the job correctly. I drop the tank but others believe removing the bed is easier. I replaced both tanks and pump assemblies over 10 years ago because of 9 year old gas in them and haven’t had to touch them since.
To answer your question- yes. There are are few people on here that have cut holes in the bed.
The bed cross member had collapsed to the frame cross member and pinched the fuel lines. There was no way to access them to release them. The only option at that point was to remove the bed or cut. The nuts/bolts, everything, was a rusty mess, I decided to cut.
The tank was empty, had been for a couple of years, and no fumes. Lines are real close too.
I’m not even sure if there is enough room to remove the FDM with the cross member in the way anyway (I did not try though, I was replacing the tank and FDM) I’ve done it each way now, I would not cut a bed again.
Dropping the tank is the best option imo. Unless you want to clean up other items while you’re there. Even if rusted out, I’d repair the bed rather than cut.
This is what you end up with.
The fwd cut was made right along the cross member, any further fwd and you’re cutting the bed cross member.
