Live data Code Reader for when there are no codes set
Over the years I've had a few problems with misfires with my 1999 F250SD with the 5.4 engine. The problem I have is that no codes are set, so my code reader is useless. Is there a code reader that can show real time data as you drive to help me identify which cylinder(s) are acting up. Having to remove and install fuel rails, coils and sparkplugs one cylinder at a time, and then re-install for a test drive is not fun, especailly with my luck as I'd start with cyl 1 and 8 tries later I would find it's the coil for cyl 8 !. If I could narrow down the cylinder, it would make things so much easier. Any recommendations for a reader (and not a mega buck one please as this is for home use). T-Y.
Got a scanner quite a while ago that does Mode 6, but when I try it on my 1999 truck, it comes back and says it's unsupported. So I left it.... a long time. Tried again yesterday. Still nothing with ignition on, and engine off. Then I drove it for a minute or two and this time when I tried Freeze Frame Data info came up. Sure enough a P0306 code was there. So cylinder number 6. Changed the coil and it now runs perfectly. I see what went wrong with the old coil. One of the two connector pins was severely corroded. Could have cleaned it and been running again for free, but the problem would have come back in a few months. So paying for a new coil is fine with me.
I like to follow-up. Maybe it'll help someone else. It also is polite as it shows those who helped me I havn't forgotten you.
