"Live" data code readers

"Live" data code readers

Will a "Live" data code reader give readings of cylinder mis-fires on an engine that is stuttering? (engine is not throwing codes)

Or other readings to help pin point the cause?

I know my scanner (Actron 9180) will read misfires recorded by the PCM. The PCM will NOT throw a code on misfires (unless there is a complete failure of the coil) but will record them. You just need a scanner/reader that will read that info from the PCM.

Finally ordered a "live" code reader. (Actron 9145)

While waiting for it to arrive, I finally was able to pull a code with my cheapy code reader (still no CEL light) p308- #8 cylinder misfire.

Changed #8 COP and misfire is gone, running great!

Next day, new code reader arrived. Guess I'll have to wait til next time for a misfire condition.........

I've been using a Scan Gauge II (semi permanent installed in Truck) for maybe a year or so now. It's worked well for me finding codes as they occur. It's also come in handy in my '01 Montana.

The pcm has a threshold for cylinder misfires before it will post a CEL on the dashboard.
I forget what it is but its real high in the 5k range.
It will however store the codes for them .
