I've done some digging but not countless hours of digging and trying to maybe sum up a list of all the transmissions compatible between motors.
From what I've read ford kept the same bellhousing bolt patterns across the modular platform from 4.6/5.0/5.4/6.2(i believe full under this)/6.8
So are the 4r75/4r100, 6r80/6r100/6r140, 5r100 all interchangeable with one another? Since they (to my knowledge) just bolt to the back of each block? And would adapter plates for one transmission work for others given the same bolt pattern.
hopefully we can create a transmission interchangeable thread for other members looking for a answer in one location.
One problem you will definitely run into is that most of these transmissions are controlled differently.
True.

Not true. All 4R100s were controlled by the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) that controlled both he engine and the transmission.
Having made that correction, it is true that you can't use the PCM from a 4R70W to make a 4R100 work. It won't control that transmission. In fact, no PCM can control a different transmission.

Controls aside would a 4r100 gas and a 6r80 share the same bell housing bolt pattern given that the 4r100 was bolted to 5.4/6.8 in the f250/350.
I'm trying to source an adapter plate for a 6r80 however that isn't an option but a 5.4/6.8 adapter plate is available.
The bolt pattern on the transmission is only one of many issues to contend with. I think your biggest obstacles are all going to be related to the control side, especially when going to a newer design.

For the 11-14 transmissions a company US Shift makes a stand alone for the 4r100, 6R80/6R100 so there is some aftermarket support, no idea how they actually work, but I've read both good things as well as a few negative things. Only way to know is to try.

Thanks so much for this post! From what I'm reading, I can swap a 4R100 into my 2005 Lincoln Aviator. The bellhousing will bolt to the engine, but it may be longer than the 5R55E, and I will need an external controller to support it's electronics.
Is this true? The 5R55E is weak, and will never handle this vehicle. It has a rebuilt in it that it having issues at 40K of normal ( not abusive ) use. I love everything else about this vehicle, and it's perfect for me. It has plenty of power to tow a boat, but this trans will not hold up. Why have it rebuilt if it's only going to last 40K? The Navigators have the 4R100 and they do great. I hope this thread isn't too old for this question.
Thanks!
Reading the thread may have answered a few questions for me. Can I swap the auto trans from an 05 f250 into a 05 f150? Same bellowing and all so it bolts up. Would I need to use the transfer case from the 250 as well as get a stand alone controller for the trans or can I make them shake hands with stock 150 computer?
I am new here. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if I can use a transmission from a 2002 F150 to replace my transmission in my 2003 F250. I found a really good deal on the transmission—I fear it’s not likely to work☹️
Thanks for any help you are able to provide!

If both trucks (moreso the F150) use the 4R100, then yes.
Most F150s don’t use that transmission, though. The 4R70 those usually make use of would be shredded pretty quickly and won’t be controlled by the F250 computer, anyway.
