I have an Actron CP 9015 code scanner for my Fords. Call Autozone/Napa/Pep Boys etc. One of these places should have it for only about 35 bucks. It will come with an XLNT instruction manual & pulling the codes with it is a VERY SIMPLE 2 minute job. If you want more info check out this link www.actron.com & click on sunpro

Hi again 93rangerg,

I have a EEC-IV system on my 90' + you have a OBD-II system on your 93'. My manual dosen't cover your testing procedures...sorry!
But you'll need a diagnostic scanner to perform your testing. Check around! Some auto stores will do code pulling for free!

If you have the Haynes manual 36071, the information for pulling codes is in chapter 6, starts on page 2 (Obtaining codes). Also Haynes prints a manual dedicated to nothing but how to pull codes from most cars/trucks, but I do not have one (yet).
Good luck

This seems like a stupid question but, how do I clean my MAF sensor? I have that part of the tube seperated from the filter on one site & from the tube on the other, and what I see inside it is a little tube running it's length with 2 little exposed wires inside it. Do I just find pipe cleaners and wipe the wires down? My repair manual doesn't mention cleaning it. Oh, and there are a few safety hex screws holding it together. Unfortunately I don't have a screwdriver that can undo those.

Check out this link and click on "engine pinging" Xlnt instructions for cleaning the MAF. DO NOT clean it with a pipe cleaner. www.glue.umd.edu/~singletn/exp.html

Unless someone with more experience suggests otherwise I would limit the cleaning to just a little spray contact cleaner (safe for use with electrical equipment) so as not to damage the wires, I'm sure they are very sensitive.

1993 Rangers are EEC-IV. You can pull codes from a '93 Ranger by following the instructions here:

Mass Air Flow Sensor cleaning information can be found here: Cleaning Your MAF

Ok, thanks guys. Looks like I'll need to wait till Autozone or someplace is open before I can do much more, but I've got a good idea of where to go from here.
I'll let you know how it turns out.

Correct.

(Only exceptions that I know of: the 1994 T-Bird, Mustang & Cougar were OBD-II Compliant)

Ok, I pulled the codes on it.
I got a continuous memory error 123 - Throttle Position Sensor voltage too high,
and a running test error 172 - Heated Exhaust Gas Oxygen sensor indicates lean bank #1.
Any idea what to do to fix this?

I think the TPS code is pretty straight forward, it's either putting out the correct voltages (approx 1 volt at idle up to 5 volts at full throttle) or it isnt. If it was me I would replace the TPS & see if the O-2 code goes away. With higher than normal TPS voltage it would seem that you would get a rich condition, not lean, but I could be wrong. I think a TPS is about 45 bucks at Napa.

hm... I did the TPS checking as the repair manual instructed. Turns out the TPS was getting a Reference Voltage of .9V instead of the 5V it's supposed to get. Looks like I'll have to take it to a shop after all.

Sounds like your XLNT trouble shooting has just saved you 45 bucks. Good job. I'm looking at the wiring diagram for the EEC-4 on my 87 Ranger which might be the same as yours and it shows that all sensors recieve voltage from the ECA/electronic control assembly. Have you checked reference voltage at any other sensors?
