The word from the guys at the shop is that the #1 cylinder is only compressing to 90 psi and is burning the spark plug. He quoted $1700 to fix it depending on what they found after taking that head off, and that I may want to consider a new vehicle instead. Is that a reasonable price, or is he pulling my leg?
oh, 2? I can change my own oil, but I have no real experience working on vehicles, and don't know what 80% of the objects in the engine compartment actually do.
I don't think I know anyone with anything like that, but I don't know what tool you're talking about.
He gave me the compressions for all of my cylinders. I suppose he ran a compression check to get those numbers.
You modified your air intake and now you need a rebuild? Sounds like quite a leap to me. The engine must have been worn out long before the mod. You didn't say how many miles it has on it.
I agree, you should have the compression checked again before you make a decision on what to do.
If it were my truck, and somebody credible told me that it needed a $1700 engine job, I'd either (1) unload it now and get as much money as possible for it, or (2) drive it until the engine completely dies, then worry about what do do with it.
Just my .02.
P.S. What about the TPS and 02 Sensor codes? Did the shop explain to you how their bad cylinder diagnosis relates to the codes you were getting?

I agree with Rockledge. Also, when ever a problem occurs right after doing something, especially a modification, theres a very good chance the modification has something to do with the problem. At least thats been my experience.
Hey, 93rangerg, looks like a setup from ifab. Got one on my 4.0 and it works good. I just left the lower half of the intake box on with the exaust thing connected to it. The only thing i can think of is, does your engine have an oil breather? I know that when i pull the oil breather hose off of the intake, the engine starts running rough, and seems like it is going to die. then when i hook it back up everything is peachy. Also, does anyone know why there is a Intake Air Temperature sensor on his 93 2.3l and there isnt one one my 94 4.0l? I know theres somthing that makes up for it connected to the top of the stock airbox, but its not like a removable sensor, its just a "thing" with 2 small hoses going to it. Hey, hope this helps, My ifab intake worked really good, and i havent had any problems with it, it even made my truck sound more throaty on acceleration. I hope you can get your's working, also check to make sure you didnt accidentally unhook any wires, or anything like that. about your compression, i'd get the tps thing and the oxy sensor thing settled, then worry about that. heck , you may be able to get a bit more out of the old 4 banger before it dies
Also put some "air filter" oil on that filter if you havent allready, the one i got from ifab didnt come preoiled. And if you didnt get it from ifab, disregard what i just said. But still make sure its oiled.
