whats up yall, im PJ
i got a 98 2.5 5spd, 66k. 2nd ranger, just bought it a couple weeks ago. ok if the mass air flow sensor is plugged in, the truck starts fine and idles smooth, but if i give it any gas it bogs down and dies. resetting the ecu did nothing. if i unplug the sensor, reset ecu, then it idles rough, and sometimes stalls, but above 1000rpm its strong and smooth. i just drove it 600 miles with the sensor unplugged; i couldnt even tell except that it idles rough and occasionally stalls. ive done tons of reading on this site about the mass air flow sensor, and i think that it is bad/dirty. does this seem corect? just wanted some 2nd opinions. thanks guy, awsome board here
Adding to ctfuzzy's advise, be careful when cleaning your Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor element...IT IS VERY DELICATE!
DO NOT TOUCH IT AT ALL!
I disassembled, inspected; using a magnifying glass + spray electrical contact cleaner then reassembled the black-box devise! (others have also used carb cleaner + had positive results)!

Well, actually RAM is dirt cheap. In fact, I have about $500.00 worth in this computer, that you can now buy for about $120.00 in any number of $%&^% places
grrrrrrrrrrr that wasnt the problem. truck still ran like crap after i cleaned the maf, reset computer. it wont go over 1500rpm with the sensor plugged in. i unplugged it and i guess the computer goes into some sort of default program because it runs a lot better with it unplugged. it looked fine to me when i cleaned it but do these sensors go completely bad? anybody?
I just had the exact same problem in my 99 2.5
I ended up having to replace my MAF and its only about $128 from ford. I would say that you are going to have to replace yours too.
How do you pull the codes off of these trucks? I know how to pull them off my stang, but i have no idea on my truck. Is there a way to do it with a multimeter like my mustang? Otherwise I'll just head to Autozone from now on.
wolfen, no i havent had a chance to pull the codes. been pretty busy with school and such. ive been limping around town with the mafs unplugged until i can afford a new one. i think with the sensor unplugged it seems to be running rich. besides mileage, will this hurt anything else? foul the plugs? o2 sensors?
