I have a puzzler here..... My 1990 F150 4x2, has a 133" wheelbase, and a 1 piece aluminum driveshaft. My recently acquired 1986 F150 4x2, is also 133" wheelbase. BUT, it has a 2 piece drive shaft with midship bearing. Both my trucks have the 5.0 engine, and code T AOD trans. Why would one truck come with a 2 piece, and one not? Were the 2 piece ones in the F150's done away with, after 1986?
Probably to cut costs is my guess.
I know the one peice shafts are harder to balance, and easier to pretzel hitting a rock or under alot of torque. Two piece are much better in my opinion.
All my 90's regular cabs were one peice.

Did 1990 trucks come with aluminum drive shafts? I thought they were all still steel at that point. So I wonder if some time in the last 33 years someone put a new drive shaft in that truck and chose not to do it the same as stock.

I've never seen an aluminum driveshaft on an OBS. Assuming Prototypemech is on the right track. Probably threw a shaft at some point and found an aluminum shaft that was close enough.
The aluminum shaft in my 90, had original Ford U joints in it, so either the PO did adriveshaft swap, or they ran out of steel shafts on the assembly line, and used what they had on hand
Hello I have a 1993 Ford f150 XLT lariat extended cab with the wheelbase of 133. 5.0 motor n 8.8 rear differential rear-wheel drive aod transmission and I cannot find the 4-in aluminum drive shaft that came standard on my truck it is 70.5 in from the furthest part of the u-joint to the other for this part of the u-joint. I cannot find this part anywhere at local junk yards recycling centers etc and the only ones I'm finding online do not want to be for the aod transmission only the e4od transmission and they're also wanting close to $700 a piece can anybody help me in a finding this part or b answering for sure whether or not I can switch my one piece aluminum drive shaft to a two peace drive shaft any and all help is greatly appreciated thank you
The only trucks I have seen with an aluminum driveshaft are 2wd 5.0 AOD or 4R70W in the regular cab long bed configuration in 87-96 with 8.8 rear end. An 86 has a 9 inch rear I believe.
