Hi all, I am new to this forum, I just picked up a 2001 F350 5.4 truck with a p0304 code. Really didn't think it would be that big of a deal until I went to test the coil and found it loose. A little more investigating and found out that the screw head is broken off. Now of course this is for #4 and a real pain to get to. I live in the northeast so the weather is not great for spending hours working on a truck and I do not have a garage to get it into. So my question really is do I try to fight with it, and hope to get tips from you guys or just bring it to a garage and hope they deal with it correctly. While I am at it I will most likely replace all 8 plugs and coils. If I do it myself at least for right now only replace #4.
Thanks in advance Steve
What do you mean “try and fight with it”? Yes, you need to remove it to properly affix a replacement coil. Throw some heat at it and drill it out or we’ll a nut to it.
I know I need to remove the screw and replace it properly that was not the question. The issue is I can hardly touch the broken screw, never mine get tools or heat on it correctly. This is Cylinder #4 up against the firewall. I can start ripping thing apart but the may lead to more broken stuff and more time. Time and weather are not what I have right now.
Get a piece of closed cell foam like neoprene. Wedge it between the top of the coil and under the fuel rail. It should hold it until you have time to properly remove the broken screw.
If you don’t wanna do that yiu can try predrilling next to the original screw using a angle bit drill and then screwing in another screw. I’m not sure how much space you have. I did it on a crown vic. I have extra COP screws if you need some
Last year I replaced a COP and somehow forgot to put the screw back in. I drove several thousand miles with no problems. I just happened to notice it one day. But I had no check engine light.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I just realized I was suppose to have sent this yesterday. While it was a nice day yesterday I decided to give it a go again. This time with the best tool I have for such a thing vice grips baby ones at that and some liquid wrench. I still could not get close to getting a good bit on the screw or and when I did get it a little bit I had no room to turn it.
I have a call into a garage see what they can do for me.
