360 Rebuild

I have a pretty good gash on one of the cylinder walls of my block. Has anyone ever bought a new block and reused old pistons? I figured as long as I get new rings it should all run smoothly. Just curious if anyone had experience with that.

Sure, you can tell who does that by the blue cloud that follows them.

If you are into the engine that far, UNLESS you mic the pistons and find the IN SPEC, it's time for new stuff. Besides, the OEM pistons for a 360 end up .120+ down the hole, so if you have one apart and need a new block, just find a 390 to rebuild.

I’m torn between machine work and buying a 390 to build. I’m on a super tight budget right now so I’m heading to the machine shop tomorrow for a quote but I’m trying to save as much as i can. I’ve done a few engines but never had to have machine work done just bare minimum (rings, gaskets, etc)

True machine work and "sleeving" that cylinder can be pricey, but buying a second engine and building it won't be cheap either. And I think once the piston in that scored cylinder is removed, I think you'll find you need a new piston. Assuming this isn't your daily driver, make a good plan and do what you can when your wallet allows.
