Im starting to rebuild my 360 in my 76 ford f-250 and I wanted to know if there is anything i need to look for. Im rebuilding it because it has lost compression on 2 cylinders and all the others are under 100. This is the first ford motor that I have rebuilt and any info would be great. I plan on using this truck for a daily driver. Thanks
use a 428 crank and get a 410 merc motor. gobs of toruque. stock was around 440ft lbs. their are a few sites that sell stroker cranks for it. i rebuilt a 360 into a 390 and i wish i had known of the stroker kits out there. runs about the same price as rebuilding a stock bottom end if you have to buy a used crank and rods.
Put a 390 rotating assembly in it, install a straight up timing set and ditch the restrictive exhaust manifolds for a set of headers, get a factory 4bbl "S" intake (no need to drop $300 on a Eddy performer when the "S" intake flows just as well and the weight savings is a moot point in a 3 ton truck) and you'll really wake that FE up.
id have to say rebuild your 360 and try to find 390 crank and rods. i just put a new intake on my 360 and only issues there was the dist. took some muscle to get out and the stock intake seems like it weighs 40 lbs. but you should be alright rebuilding it. I plan to make a 390 out of mine when i get out of the navy just so ill have the original block to have matching numbers.
wow i didnt think it was that much but i know it took me a good 5 minutes to get out and i had to roll it off the fender, the new one weighed maybe 15 it felt like
i see rotating assemblies on cl and ebay all the time. you'll be better off going that route....it will be the biggest bang for the buck thing you can do. i bought all of my 390 parts at summit racing. theyll beat anybody elses price IF they need to, but its not likely and shipping is free after so much $ spent. i had a very good bottom end in my 390 so i dropped about 2k in the top end. 1400 if you dont count the headers. the hardest part about rebuilding a ford is stomaching the cost of parts. my intake was over 300 and the cam set was almost 400. i thought summit was really easy to deal with, and if you have access to a computer to place your order, go that route. definately though, like everyones saying, while you have the thing apart, pick up a 390 rotating assembly. i would probably pick up a good condition used 390 before i rebuilt a motor as a 360.
The 4 barrel "T" intake is good for 10hp over the "S" intake.
I've always thought they were pretty comparable but then again i've never personally done a dyno comparison between the two, is that info from Jay Browns intake comparison over on the FE board?
