Separation Plate Question on a 302 w/C4: I have an '89 engine which I'm trying to get running. Used vehicle and the old owner is passed away so I have no info on where which parts may have come from. The flexplate balance weight is hitting the separation plate when I try to manually rotate the engine. Now the C4 has the starter mounting bolt holes and everything looks good there. If I delete the separation plate altogether will it cause me problems? Maybe put washers between the starter and trans bell with the mounting bolts to simulate the plate spacing?

I might be wrong, but if the flexplate balance weight is hitting the separation plate, I think the flexplate is in backwards. But, it has been a while since I worked on this setup.
I would also say flex plate is the issue
And you must run the motor mid plates as it locates the starter.
The lip around the starter fits into the plate to hold it in place just the starter bolts dont cut it.
FYI small blocks use a different motor mid plate between manual & auto transmissions on the older trucks so guessing the same with the 87> trucks.

This engine is a transplant into a '52 ford sedan and not very well done at that. I came originally to this forum because I thought the engine was from a truck. I got great replies to my other problems so I like this forum. Hope no one gets too upset that I ask my ignorant questions here, seems like a knowledgeable place.
