I may repost this in a broader engine forum, but since I'm already here; What's a good module to replace the Chinese things that come in the lower-priced HEI units?
The one that came with my distributor is working fine, but years of driving around with a spare DS ll box (just in case) have made this kind of thing a habit. I just want to know who makes reliable (not hi-perf,racy stuff) module. I've been disappointed (to put it mildly) more than once by buying something, especially electronic gizmos, from reputable "big names" only to find rebranded Chinese parts.
I've had plenty of store-brand HEI modules fail in my classic Oldsmobile. I can attest to the fact that the cheapies are just that. I always carry a spare module in my glovebox.

What kind (brand) are you using/carrying?
I bought a cheap TPS for my Dodge that failed almost immediately. I replaced it w a NAPA (Echelin) unit that looked idendical, right down to the little sticker on the back. The two big differences were that the NAPA piece cost 3x more and... it's still working.
I don't mind paying the extra dough for a good part... but l HATE getting ripped-off.
3x as much but still working would be good in my book.
I bought a NAPA top of the line starter solenoid for my truck. Yep it was a few bucks but been working fine over the last year and a half.
Echelin and Standard would be 2 I would say are good to good with. At least were back in the day.
I would hit NAPA again for the part.

The modules I had that failed were just the Standard brand from O'Reilly Auto Parts. x2 on buying name brand (ACDelco) or from NAPA. Be wary of the aftermarket parts (Accel or MSD). They're know to fail just as readily as the cheapies (also true for late model CoP ignition parts).

Your whole distributor is made in China. Keep an eye on it and let us know if you have trouble with it. Some people claim they did have trouble with theirs, though it seemed like only one or two did. May have been something else that caused it.

The last one of these l bought (for an old Dodge) was a Chinese model too and it lasted until after l sold the vehicle, about 5 yrs. A GM savvy buddy helped me out with some know-how and a box full of take-off parts from his high performance builds. I may be calling on him again
